Tim Fast at RBC!

Tim Fast at RBC!

Jun 8, 6:00pm

Rapids Brewing Co.214 N Pokegama AveGrand Rapids, MN55744 Map

Tim taught himself to play guitar at a young age (he still doesn’t read music) and his first guitar was a Silvertone his parents bought him after he tried building his own guitar after seeing the Beatles on "The Ed Sullivan Show" when he was 8. He counts the late Chicago singer-songwriter Steve Goodman as one of his biggest early influences. After seeing Goodman perform in Minneapolis in 1975, Tim decided, “That’s what I wanted to do the rest of my life.” From then on, his life was about music.

In pursuit of that dream, he traveled roads that gave him a breadth of experience and would serve him well when he decided to become a full-time troubadour. He bussed tables, worked crab boats out of Dutch Harbor, Alaska, fabricated sheet metal, inspected produce for the California Department of Food and Agriculture and worked as a stonemason. Woody Guthrie once advised, “All you can write is what you see,” and Tim let the characters he met and the roads he ambled tell the stories in his songs. “Many of my songs are about life’s experiences because the best songs come from what you know best,” he said. He’s told those stories on three well-received albums — the self-titled Tim Fast in 2003, followed by Starlite Drive-In in 2007 and his latest, Crooked Door, released in 2011.

Tim’s talent has been recognized by his peers. He’s studied with some of the greats of contemporary acoustic music, including David Wilcox, fellow Minnesotan Pat Donahue, Kathy Mattea, Johnsmith and Ellis Paul, to name a few. Cliff Eberhardt was so impressed with Tim that he asked him to tour with him as his opening act. Eberhardt saw what audiences have long seen: that Tim has a dazzling repertoire of original songs that leave people humming and thinking — and ready to join him on his journey to see what’s over the next rise.

Join us in the Taproom for a live performance by Shagawa Shorty!
---
Bio from Shagawa Shorty's FB Page:

It's hard to get a bead on who (or what) Shorty actually is. Some maintain he is a shaved Sasquatch trying to pass as a human. Others suggest he was once a middle class parent who had a mental breakdown from imbibing in too much Barney, TeleTubbies and BooBah with his children. Some even suggest he may have once been a college professor or a kindergarten teacher! In fact, Shorty has claimed all of these origins at one time or another so it is nearly impossible to determine which story may contain a grain of truth and which are simply the products of Shorty's fervent and twisted imagination.

What is clear is what happens when Shorty performs (either by himself or with his band the Derelicts). You'll hear wicked, dirty slide guitar playing. blues ranging from Son House and Bessie Smith to Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf, as well the occasional tune by Paul Thorn, Chris Smither or Bob Dylan. Please be aware that you may also be subjected to Shorty's outrageous stories. ridiculous lies and really bad jokes as Shorty seeks to emulate his idol, the late Utah Phillips.

When Shorty is at home he also provides luthiery (guitar repair) service for folks on the Iron Range in Minnesota.

Bruce Archer @ RBC!

Bruce Archer @ RBC!

Jun 22, 7:00pm - Jun 22, 10:00pm

Rapids Brewing Co.214 N Pokegama AveGrand Rapids, MN55744 Map

Bruce returns to RBC with his a smoky, primitive Americana infused with blues, bluegrass, country, folk, and rock influences. His impressive finger-picking and slide guitar display a level of mastery that comes from 40-plus years of playing and sifting through musical styles, keeping the bits that resonate with him while merging his Iowa roots and his years in the Minneapolis alt-rock scene. He coaxes from his guitar an instrumental voice that is authentically his own.

Masterful finger-picking and slide guitar punctuate the highly autobiographic lyrics of his album THE HALLOWED LAND. This eclectic, sometimes rollicking, sometimes reflective, genre-bending album is a paean to traditional storytelling.

Archer's career has taken him from open mic nights in college, through forming, performing in and writing for bands that regularly played high profile alt-music clubs in Uptown, Downtown and West Bank Minneapolis, to returning to performing solo in the north woods of Minnesota. He's enjoyed playing with some top-notch musicians, including opening for legendary bass guitarist Ronnie Lane (Small Faces), the Uppity Blues Women, the Jayhawks, the Gear Daddies’ frontman Martin Zellar, the Phones, and Run Westy Run—to name a few.

Through it all, he has relied on his Iowa roots and sense of who he is bringing a raw authenticity to his performances.

Jason grew up on the family farm north east of Effie…. he did plenty of animal chores as well as logging with his father.
In his teenage years he decided to simplify things by putting a new floor in his great grandpas wooden grainery and lived in it.
It was 16ft long by 10ft wide. Side walls were 4ft high. (No windows)…
He towed it out in in the middle of the field, put a barrel stove in the end without the door and started using only draft horses.
He put in a 1 and a half acre garden and had 2 milking cows.

In addition to simple, off the grid living, Jason always enjoyed singing and he started playing guitar when he was 27 years old.
Some local music veterans helped him start a band about five years ago.
And he’s been enjoying playing ever since!

Some of the artists Jason likes to play are:
Tyler Childers
Hank Jr
Colter Wall
Buck Owens
Hank 3
Waylon Jennings
Johnny Cash

Based out of the backwoods just north of Duluth, MN, The Brothers Burn Mountain are a soulful, energetic, eclectic duo of real-life brothers, Ryan and Jesse Dermody. They’ve been playing music together everyday as a duo for 20 years. They’ve released 9 full-length albums of original music, and have toured across the country over the years, though especially in the Midwest, having played more than 1,800 live shows. Their sound is a roiling melting pot of so many musical influences, that it’s hard to describe, except as energetic and eclectic; with afro-cuban rhythms, Zappa-esque spontanaeity, grittiness, bluesyness, tenderness, and a singer-songwriter, folky flair.
This spring, they’re releasing a new album called The Dark Exchange, co-produced and collaborated on with Alan Sparhawk of Low, with guest musicians Rich Mattson, Germaine Gemberling, Brooke Anderson and Jeff Gilbertson. The album was recorded at their own off-the-grid studio. Built from all recycled materials, Diarmada Studios is nestled in the deep woods only 40 miles north of Duluth.

Driftless Revelers at Rapids Brewing

Jul 14, 7:00pm

Rapids Brewing Co.214 N Pokegama AveGrand Rapids, MN55744 Map

The Driftless Revelers paddle north to this fine ale house and eatery in Grand Rapids Minnesota. Outdoor music in the midsummer means late sunsets, beautiful weather, and weirdos playing hot string music for denizens of the range.

About the Band:

The Driftless Revelers formed in the second spring of the first global pandemic of the 21st century, with one ear turned toward the shellac platters and Victrola virtuosos of the early to mid 20th century, and the other ear glued to the soundscapes of the 1960's & 1970's American freak-folk scene.

Featuring the original songwriting of Ben Nelson, Matthew R. Sayles, and Jerod Kaszynski, the Driftless Revelers will pleasure a crowd with plectral banjo tones, the mournful wailing of resophonic steel guitars, and the up-right bass bellows of an era that can't quite be defined, but revels in the timeless ephemera of weird old-time American music.

โ€‹With influences as varied and eccentric as a proper musty smelling thrift store record collection, the band grooves merrily through early roots blues and jazz music, to hillbilly and string band howlers, all the way into the not-quite folk but not-quite psychedelic realms of their own creation.

โ€‹A Driftless Revelers show will lure you in with their joy--keep you dancing with their search for the cosmic groove in the confines of stringed instruments--and will send you on your way with flashbacks of the Driftless Revelry found only in the essence of the intangible reaches of notes once played-- that then fall silent.

The music of Duluth-based Americana singer-songwriter Grant Glad transforms the day-to-day struggle of American living into foot-stomping, full-hearted anthems about chasing dreams and dancing while you do it. At times twangy, at times funky, his albums stretch the boundaries of several genres to produce something entirely new: songs that offer the loose, raw spirit of punk rock, the bold, driving rhythms of roots rock-and-roll, and the rich sense of personal history that makes classic country forever relevant.

Inspired by down-home, storytelling artists from John Prine to Bruce Springsteen to Uncle Tupelo, Grant Glad writes with a back-to-basics mentality, focusing on guitars, bass, drums, fiddle, and lyrics written by real people for real people.

Adam Moe is a fiddler and singer/songwriter based in Duluth, MN. In 2012, he started the folky-tonk duo Pushing Chain with then partner Boyd Blomberg. For the next eight years, Pushing Chain toured the US and Canada, playing venues big and small and gaining fans the old-fashioned way — face to face, one at a time. Adam has been featured on radio and television, and played some of the biggest festivals in the country, including the 2019 Woody Guthrie Festival and the 2019 Kerrville Folk Festival.

With the onset of the 2020 pandemic, Adam has set out on a solo career. His unique original songs backed by his tenor guitar and delivered with his clear, bluesy tenor make for a great show.

Adam believes that good music can make strangers share a table, and he proves it every time he plays. He’s nothing if not entertaining.

John Kerns at RBC!

John Kerns at RBC!

Aug 3, 7:00pm

Rapids Brewing Co.

John Kerns is a life-long musician with talents and abilities that reach far beyond the average musician. A powerful vocalist, a multi-instrumentalist and proficiency at running behind-the-scenes sound and recording, showcases him as a jack-of-all-trades in the local music industry of The Twin Cities.

Music has been part of his life and family for decades. His grandfather, Lynn Kerns, toured between world wars in the Rhythm Club Orchestra and his father, Dan Kerns, was a high school band director. This inspired John to learn piano, saxophone and guitar in school and appreciate all genres and instruments.

John began teaching private guitar and bass lessons in 1997 after graduating from Gustavus Adolphus College. Teaching a wide range of students from beginner to advanced, ages 7-67, helped Kerns hone his own skills and come into his own playing and writing music.

Leading and playing in bands as Music Director for Spirit Garage, the Church With the Really Big Door, gave Kerns a unique perspective on how musicians of all levels absorb skills and material. 25 years at this church allowed him to express himself musically and spiritually while collaborating in songwriting, sound mixing, livestream production, producing and recording 3 CD’s along with worship leadership, event coordination and mentorship of volunteers.

Outside of the church world, Kerns has worked with many other bands and musicians, including Jonathan Rundman, Natalie Lovejoy, The Bazillions and Scott Laurent to name a few. His personal projects include rock band Kerns and the Hemispheres, which allowed him to record his first full original CD “Electron Drive”, and, an original children’s album, “Cradlesongs”.

Currently, along with still teaching lessons, Kerns plays in “Sir Psycho”, a Red Hot Chili Peppers Tribute act, performs acoustic shows with long-time collaborator and friend Shelly Domke [and The Hemispheres], and performs many community engagement shows geared to children and families.

Sam Miltich is a self-taught jazz guitarist born and raised in the woods of northern Minnesota. Sam burst on the scene in his teens as a young lion of gypsy jazz, joining Paul Mehling's Hot Club of San Francisco and touring internationally with the world-renowned Robin Nolan Trio. Sam's fluid and instinctive sound has graced hundreds of stages, from small town bars on the Iron Range to Lincoln Center.

In addition to fronting his own band, the Clearwater Hot Club, Sam records and performs extensively with Minneapolis-based jazz singers, Connie Evingson and Charmin Michelle; legendary Twin Cities saxophonist Dave Karr; and Dutch swing violin maestro, Tim Kliphuis. Sam has also collaborated with mandolin virtuoso Peter Ostroushko and classical guitarist Joan Griffith. In 2010, he received a grant to study intensively with Belgian guitar icon Fapy Lafertin and has since then received many more regional and federal arts grants to further his musical development and creative projects. In addition to gypsy swing and traditional jazz Sam's musical interests include Brazilian choro, French musette, Eastern European tamburitza, and other forms of traditional folk music.

By choice, Sam lives in northern Minnesota, performing at a very high level while maintaining life in a working class, small-town setting. Sam is committed to bringing world-class jazz to a part of the country where live jazz performances are otherwise quite rare. He also organizes the Itasca Orchestra String Program Summer Jazz Camp which teaches young classically-trained musicians how to improvise.

Mike Munson at RBC!

Aug 10, 7:00pm

Rapids Brewing Co.

Mike Munson makes his home in the small river town of Winona, Minnesota. He has had the honor of opening for the renowned Mavis Staples (2022), performing at the Montreal International Jazz Festival (2022), Waterfront Blues Festival (Portland, OR, 2018), and the Vancouver Folk Fest (2018). His Americana duo with Jake Ilika, “Land at Last” is a regional favorite and he regularly collaborates with a variety of performers on both guitar and bass.

With his fourth release, Rose Hill (2018, Blue Front Records) Munson traced the country blues tradition to its birthplace, recording at the Blue Front Cafe in Bentonia, Mississippi. Studying under and performing alongside Grammy nominee Jimmy “Duck” Holmes has informed Munson’s style and refined his craft. Munson has a deep love of all forms of American music, but blues is the undercurrent of his creativity.

Mike Munson is an adept slide guitar player who has built a career on solid songwriting and a reverence for tradition. He deftly blends dark lyrics, intricate finger-picking and hypnotic rhythms. His sound marks the similarities and highlights the distance between blues, American primitive guitar and early rock and roll.

Munson released his sixth full-length album, “Let Some Light In” in 2021 and consistently uses the cold, winter months to record new, original material.

Join us in the Taproom for a live performance by Shagawa Shorty!

Matt Yetter at RBC!

Matt Yetter at RBC!

Aug 18, 7:00pm

Rapids Brewing Co.

Matt Yetter is the real deal: an old-school, slide guitar playing, harmonica-tooting country blues artist who characterizes music as “a way of making a connection to everybody all at once”.

Based out of Minnesota for the past 30 years, Matt only discovered he could sing in 2010 after years of playing electric lead guitar and mandolin in bands. He ventured out on his own with his resophonic slide guitar, harmonica, and newfound vocal skills… and delighted audiences. In came accolades and more opportunities to perform solo – which brought with it a positive energy that didn’t compare to being in a group – and Matt was hooked.

Regularly playing old-time, rootsy blues from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s all around Minneapolis, Matt’s created his own niche – a vibe that’s hard to come across anywhere else. Like many other jazz and blues musicians, Matt’s ideology is to “carry on the tradition of the music, do your own versions of some of the classic songs and make them your own, as well as contribute to the tradition.” That’s what he’s doing, from the jangle and slide of his guitar and the croon of his harmonica to his rich, compelling vocals.

“Making kids and their parents dance and smile over and over again makes me feel I'm doing something right,” says Matt. The proof is in the pudding, and Matt Yetter’s pudding is one helluva crowd favorite.

Aug 19, 7:00pm

Johnny Cash

The Rialto Theater

We’re housed in the former Rialto Theater in downtown Grand Rapids. After its opening in 1934, the theater ran films for almost 50 years, showing classics such as ‘The Birds’ and ‘Star Wars : The Empire Strikes Back’.ย  Just like the old Rialto,ย Rapids Brewing Companyย isย  a place to come together- a hangout, a place to be. Although we’ve fully renovated the building, we took great care to pay tribute to the original design and the memories created here.ย The venue is designed to optimize the production values of performances by musicians and artists and keep the spirit of entertainment alive.
